Tamyra just does not have the lungs for it on certain parts of the song and Jennifer Holliday seems to be singing like a drag queen. Hudson has the right balance of soul and feeling in my opinion. |

| DaCritic says: Jennifer Hudson can blow, there is no denying it. Tamyra can sing her little behind off, but Jennifer Holiday just straight up SANGS the HELL out of that song. I think the big difference is because there was no media hype for Jennifer Holiday, she was just a big girl form Texas with an awesome set of lungs who could just down on a note and make it vibrate and just hang in the air. Jennifer Holiday when she made that song her signature piece was going through depression, so when she opened her mouth and sung the song she sung it with raw emotion and a deeper understanding. Imatation is the best form of flattery. Everyone who sings the song now imitates Jennifer Holiday. |

The main difference is that passion that comes from the song, when you have to pefrom it on broadway than on sound stage. If you have a bad night, you do not have a retake to get it right, you just got to wait until the next peformance. That is why Holliday sings it better. Tamyra is way too throaty, she is trying to give you Holliday. |

| Felipe Ujueta says: This song is almost always a test of a black female vocalist's true clout, and will always, always be put in comparison with the original rendition. Tamyra surprised me that she could even get through the song, let alone do a good job. However, in the case of Jennifer Hudson, we see an almost completely individualized interpretation of the piece, with a few nods to Miss Holliday, but not a complete rip of the original take. Hudson truly makes the song her own, and lives in the character that she plays in the film, which is what makes this version of "And I Am Telling You" work not only as a great song, but as a great VERSION of the song. There will never, ever be another Jennifer Holliday, but Jennifer Hudson may very well be an extremely close second with her performance vocally and dramatically in "Dreamgirls." |
